Question: I'm 38 weeks pregnant. At my appointment 3 days ago, I was 4 cm dilated and about 50% effaced. I thought I was in labor yesterday and went in. Even though I am still having contractions, they said I was not in labor because I will still at 4 cm and was about 70-75% effaced. I don't understand why they sent me home. I'm still having lots of pain and contractions, but they have slowed a little.
Answer: You are probably in early labor, but according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), women aren't considered in "active labor" until 6 cm. This is probably the reason you were sent home. I understand it can be super frustrating, but really, it's best to stay home as long as possible. Your body will progress much faster and more smoothly in your most comfortable environment. Sometimes going to the hospital too early will cause labor to stop or slow down. Try to stay positive and keep at your normal activity as much as you can. You'll be headed back to the hospital in labor before you know it!
Hope you have a great labor!
